Live Live: News Archives
What has been going on in the world of Live Live

4/20/04
Our last official radio broadcast wrapped up tonight, and with it, the era of Live Live on the radio. A Heartfelt thanks to everyone who has tuned in to Live Live over the past two or so years. While Live Live will be continuing in some capacity, it will never be what it was as a radio program. We at Live Live miss it already...
3/25/04
Things have been sparse here at Live Live. We have not had the time or manpower to mobilize as we had in days and months past. Sadly, we found ousrelves winding down, slowly drifting farther and farther from the music community in which we have spent so much of our time. At a station meeting tonight, it also became clear that the future of Allston-Brighton Free Radio is in extreme jeopardy. The best-case sceneario is that the station we call home scrapes by month-to-month. The question of survival is a very immediate one and is such that the station can not sufficiently be relied upon to support our project or mission.

We at Live Live have made the very hard decision to end our radio broadcasts. Our last Tuesday on the air will be April 27.

3/25/04
Our interview with Momentum is posted, along with a choice tune of theirs from Matt Murphy's earlier this year. Enjoy!
2/11/04
We spend a lot of time talking about the community that exists around live music on Live Live, and last night we were fortunate enough to host a little community gathering of our own. We'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ryan Montbleau, Hi8us, and Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda for coming down to the ABFree studios to help celebrate Live Live's 100th show. There is no better way to celebtate this milestone than the people we've met over the years, people who have contributed their time and their music. Many thanks to all the artists who have contributed to Live Live for the past 100 shows, and most of all, thanks for the music.
1/30/04
After a long stretch of inactivity, the Live Live interviews are back! Our interview with Townhall is posted. Pictures are forthcoming. Enjoy!
1/29/04
It was two years ago today that Live Live first broadcast itself over the airwaves. Here's to two years of bringing you the best live music in Boston and Beyond...
1/21/04
We are slowly but surely updating all the information on our website, and we are just about finished. livelive.org is once again up-to-date. Which after all this time is a nice feeling.
1/16/04
Happy New Year from all of us at Live Live! After months of waiting and planning, the Live Live website is back online, although pieces are missing. We are working around the clock to try to get things back up as you remember them, but there's a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it. We appreciate your patience, and thank you for bearing with us through this one. Even though the website has been down, the radio show has been going out over the airwaves every week in Boston. Do not fear: Live Live isn't going anywhere anytime soon. 11/11/03
website still down...
10/23/03
It seems as though the website has been down for some time now. We apologize for this inconvienence. Please make a point of checking back soon, as we expect to have it up and running shortly. There are a bunch of new shows for you to download!

We've just finished archiving and posting the hour-long DJ set supplied by Mister Rourke and Axel Foley from this past Tuesday. To be completely honest, it is a jaw-dropping achievement, well worth a listen. Enjoy!

10/4/03
The past three weeks have been filled with great guests and wonderful conversastions. A big thanks to Family Groove Company and Ten Mile Tide for travelling very long distances to come on the show and share some of their thoughts and time with us. You can download archives from each of these excellent interviews on our archives section. Enjoy!
9/17/03

Our interview with Brian is posted, complete with dramatic reading of Vanilla Ice. Enjoy! And tune in during the next two weeks for interviews with Family Groove Company and Ten Mile Tide, respectively.

8/19/03
Whew! Big week for music here in Boston and Live Live. We got back from Berkfest, and have posted our interviews with several members of the live music community for everyone to hear. We also enjoyed our conversation with Mountain of Venus this evening. The interview is posted as well. Enjoy, Enjoy!
8/9/03
Perhaps you Live Live faithful have noticed that things have been moving considerably slower than they used to as far as Live Live is concerned. There is good reason for that- David was very busy this summer navigating his way through graduate school and student teaching. Unfortunately, this meant that his efforts on the Live Live/ABFree front had to be put on the back burner for the most part. Things slowed down, but all is not lost. David has finished the summer component of his graduate work, and is ready to get back into the swing of things as far as Live Live is concerned.

There should ba flurry of activity in the next couple of weeks. The first big piece of work is that Live Live will be on-location at Berkfest, talking to as many musicians and fans as possible, as well as getting involved in the efforts surrounding SafeVibes. There should be some musicians coming into the studio as well, but the biggest news is that the Live Live team is hard at work setting up a new website. More to come on this in the next few weeks...

7/30/03
Money is tight over at ABFree, and we have realized that we are not able to pay the royalty fees associated with even a small noncommercial webcaster. We therefore have no choice but to shut down our webcast. Sad, but true. As of September 1, 2003, Allston-Brighton Free Radio will no longer be webcasting. But fear not, ye listeners from afar, we will post and make available all of our interviews right here at livelive.org...
7/23/03
Our interview with Amun Ra is posted, at long last. Thank you for your patience, dear listeners, and enjoy!
7/9/03
A big thanks to Amun Ra for coming into the studio last Tuesday. be sure to check back here for the archives of our interview.

We also have started to post our interview with Brahim and Mike from 6/24, but are running into some technical difficulties. We hope to have things worked out as soon as possible; this interview is one of our most unique and special.
6/25/03
Last night was most definitely a historical night in the annals of Live Live. We were joined by Mike Rivard and Brahim Fribgane of Club d'Elf, along with several other talented musicians who both discussed and played traditional music from Morocco. This interview and performance is a MUST-LISTEN. We will be posting the archives for you to download by the end of the weekend. Many thanks to Mike, Brahim, and everyone else who shared their music and thoughts with us last night!
6/21/03

6/3/03
Well, the move is over and David has returned from his trip to Colorado and Utah, and Live Live is in full swing once more. The website is still down, and will be for a little bit longer. We expect that things should be functional again in the middle of June. Be sure to check back here for the archives of Pete Pidgeon's visit to Live Live HQ way back on 5/13. We thank you for your patience and hope to have things up and running as soon as we can...
5/8/03
David and Tim are getting ready to move...again. Because of this, the Live Live computer nerve center will also have to be moved. This means that our website will be down for some amount of time in the near future, most likely in the last half of May and first part of June. Of course we will try to have the website up and running as soon as possible, but these things will take time. Please keep checking back with us, and for the latest, check out Allston-Brighton Free Radio's website.
5/1/03
Our review of Addison Groove Project and the OM Trio is (finally!) posted. Enjoy!
4/29/03
O Andrew where art thou?
4/24/03
Congratulations to Tasoula, lucky winner of two tickets to Jacob Fred/The Slip next Tuesday at Harper's Ferry! Sorry that nobody called in and claimed tickets to Soulive/JBB/Maktub. And of course, many thanks to Gamelan Productions for teaming up with Live Live and making it possible to offer you these fine tickets.
4/21/03
Yes, yes, this is last minute, but we're very excited to offer a pair of tickets each of two shows later this week! Be sure to tune in tomorrow night for our ticket giveaway to Soulive/John Brown's Body/Maktub and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey/The Slip, both later this week. ABFree is entering some choppy waters in the finance department. We are consequently planning to throw some most excellent benefit concerts in the near future, and of course, the Live Live team is at the forefront of these efforts. If you would like to play for one of our benefit shows, please email us!
4/9/03
Many thanks to everyone who tuned into Live Live for our live broadcast of Altitude Music. Unfortunately, technical difficulties stopped us from putting the show on the air, but be sure to check back here for archives of the performance! Also, be sure to tune in next week when Micro Vard of Altitude Music, and more aptly, Club d'Elf joins us in the studio.
4/2/03
Today was a truly momentous day in the history of our radio station, Allston-Brighton Free Radio. Steve Provizer, founder and general manager of the station, stepped away from his creation, leaving ABFree in the hands of its community. While we will most likely stumble through our first couple weeks at the helm, it is at once an exciting and daunting prospect to really have control of our own destinies as a radio station. We will strive for the best, and continue to bring the public our quality programming as long as we are able. Live Live, of course, will continue to broadcast on ABFree, and will continue to bring you the very best in live music in Boston and beyond.
3/26/03
We've moved! Live Live can now be found at www.livelive.org. This is a big step up, akin to owning a home of our own for the very first time. Many thanks to Tim for setting up all the necessaries from the tech end. Please tell your friends and neighbors: visit www.livelive.org.

Many thanks to Rana and Jamie of Guilty for coming into the studio last night and sharing their thoughts with us on the air. Archives of our conversation are posted. Enjoy!

3/22/03
Happy Spring from Live Live! Be sure to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

This is an exciting time for Live Live and ABfree. Many changes are afoot, all hopefully for the better. We have a new antenna in place, so hopefully you will be able to hear our signal better than ever. Additionally, David has received word that the NEW LIVE LIVE WEBSITE will be up and running sometime very soon. Be sure to check back here with us for the latest.

We'd like to thank Eric Colville for coming into the studio last week. Our interview is posted, along with archives of his in-studio performances. Enjoy! 3/13/03

3/12/03
We'd like to thank Hi8us for coming on the air last night and sharing their thoughts with Live Live! Check back to Live Live in the next couple of days for mp3s of our interview with the band, as well as downloads of some tracks from the band's new CD.

Turbulence ensues in the upper ranks of ABFree. We are struggling through the process of transitioning to a new management structure. We will hopefully have all the wrinkles ironed out sooner than later, but for the time being, ABFree's future is very much in question. We'll keep you posted as we know more.

3/6/03
At the ABFree station meeting last night, we as a station voted in a new general manager. Steve Provizer, founder of Allston-Brighton Free Radio, is being forced to step down after seven years. While we are very sad to see him go, and while we are losing a great resource, mentor, and friend, the new General manager and Executive Board at ABFree will be pushing the station in bold new directions. This is an exciting time for the station, as well as Live Live. David will now serve as the station's music director, as well as his duties with Live Live.

due to a miscommunication, our interview with Charlie Hunter did not take place last night. We at Live Live hope everyone who saw the show had a great time, and look forward to catching up with Charlie down the road.

2/26/03

Sam and a friend will be seeing Yonder Mountain String Band this Saturday for free, and Ben and a friend will be seeing AGP and The New Deal on Friday for free. Thanks for listening, and tune in next week when we give away tickets to Sound Tribe Sector 9!

2/12/03
It seems nobody wanted to save themselves $40 last night: the free Soulive/Kimock tickets were not claimed by anyone. We hope you have a great time at the show, but are sorry you didn't take the opportunity to go for free. Never fear, listener, you have a shot at scoring free tickets to the rest of Gamelan's El Nino concert series in the coming weeks.

It was great to catch up with Peter Prince and Johnny Trama of Peter Prince and the Trauma Unit tonight. Our interview is posted in the archives section. Enjoy!

2/5/03
Renovations at ABFree are pretty much completed and the studio looks great! We are still trying to get comfortable with the new system, but the technological advances that the renovations bring will prove to be a good move for Live Live and the station in the long run.

Altitude Music review posted. This is something David's been thinking about a lot recently, and although it doesn't review a specific show, it really says a lot about one of the best weekly gigs in Boston. Enjoy!

1/24/03
Live Live is cancelled for next week due to studio renovations. That's right, ABFree is upgrading in a major way, and although we will miss the week of our first anniversary, we are excited to be much more high tech so as to bring you the best in live music over the radio. In the meantime, efforts turn to the station's Live Music Department-efforts to get a benefit show together are in full swing, outreach efforts have begun, and the street team is primed to poster up and down the city. There's a lot of good energy at the ABFree right now, and Live Live is forging a path upwards for all involved.

There are big things a' brewing on the Live Live stove for February and March. We can't say anything yet, but we know you'll be most excited about it...

1/19/03
We had a successful ABFree station meeting this past Friday. The core group at the station is really coming together and pushing hard to get the word on on our local and independant music resource. One of the biggest pieces of news is that the station's facilities are getting renovated, which means that we will not be able to do live broadcasts for a week. Therefore Live Live's 1 year anniversary show on 1/28/03 will be cancelled. We'll see you next week, with a brand new mixing board and other technological goodies.
1/15/03
Live Live is back into full swing, and we are as busy as ever. David will be presenting new plans for the Live Music Department at the ABFree station meeting this Friday at the Jackson-Mann School in Union Square, Allston. Everyone is invited to take part in the meeting and pariticpate in advocating for progressive media.

We have a lot in store for Live Live in the coming months, and some special guests will be dropping in that are guaranteed to knock your socks off. Stay tuned...

1/7/03
Now that the holidays are over, Live Live will be kicking into full gear. Get ready for a series of informative interviews and quality music found nowhere else.

12/25/02

The Live Live website is expanding. We've included two new categories in our menu for you to choose from: Photos and Words. The Photos page will be run by DJ 1ey. There you can download his high quality photography from concerts of days past and present. The Words page is a page that will be dedicated to writing pertaining to music. We always wanted to have a place for quotable passages from liner notes, personal thoughts, tour journals, and other written pieces that were not necessarily reviews. The Words page is for everyone to read, and open to anyone for contributions. We encourage you to add your work to Live Live and take part in something positive. Enjoy!

David has received copies of the Geoff Scott Presents: Tuesday Night live broadcast from the indelible Scott Gordon. Look for the set that we broadcast on the air to be available for download some time very soon...

12/7/02
After fighting with a new soundcard and other technical problems, David's computer is working again. So, the interview with Tim from Townhall is now added to the ever-expanding Live Live interviews section. A big thanks to Tim and Carolyn from Townhall for getting the interview together. 9/4/02
As the weather turns and the days shorten, many forces are in flux in the world of Live Live. Perhaps the biggest one is the status of ABFree in the wake of the recent CARP rulings. Earlier, the station decided to mount a highly visible campaign to raise awareness about CARP and encourage people to fight the rulings by writing their congressmen. We, however, have changed our minds. Here is what Steve Provizer, the station manager at ABFree has to say:
"I think we're all in agreement that the real key to the station is growing a local radio audience. ABFR is at a crossroads and realistically, unless a strong outreach and publicity campaign is undertaken, the station will never have much meaning beyond the symbolic."
we understand our limitations. we know that the fight against CARP is not going to be won this year. So instead of fighting a losing battle, the dedicated crew at ABFree is using the CARP ruling as a point from which to restructure our station.

What does this mean for Live Live listeners? Actually, quite a lot. First and most importantly, we are keeping our webcast. Many of the steps we are taking are to ensure the future of our webcast.

Secondly, we will be very restricted as to what kind of music we are able to play. as of now, we are only allowed to play music by unsigned, independant artists, legal audience recordings, and music from record labels that have signed waivers allowing us to do so. Currently, there is not a significant collection of record labels that have signed waivers, but that will hopefully change in the coming weeks. Be sure to read up on the most recent developments on www.abfreeradio.org.

Additionally, ABFree will be engaging in quite a bit of community outreach in the coming weeks. Look for ABFree personalities in all the events, hotspots, and hangouts in Allston, Brighton, and surrounding areas.

We will also be shutting down our studios for a couple of weeks in order to do some much needed renovations and technical upkeep. When we are finished, ABFree's local signal will have a greater range and better signal, to better serve our community.

Thank you for taking interest in Live Live and ABFree in such exciting and turbulent times. We look forward to bring you all the best live music in the Boston area for some time to come.

8/31/02
Nikulydin interview posted. Enjoy!
8/30/02
Tea Leaf Green interview posted. Enjoy!

There is an emergency station meeting for ABFree tomorrow at 1pm. Due to the enforcement of the CARP rulings, we will be changing the format of the station. From now on, all music shows will be playing music that is not covered under CARP. This slightly limits our ability to play any and all music, but at the same time forces us to concentrate on the best local, independant, and unsigned artists in Boston and the greater live music community. If you are a musician, we would love to include you in our programming! Email us if you are interested in receiving free media exposure from Live Live.

8/29/02
Addison Groove Project interview posted (finally!) Enjoy!

Our other interviews (AGP, TLG, Nikulydin) will be posted shortly now that we have the technology on our side.

Takin' it to the streets...Allston Brighton Free Radio will be broadcasting from the Boston Common for one month in an effort to raise awareness and educate the masses on the CARP rulings and their adverse effect on stations such as ours. Look for Live Live and other quality radio programs to be gracing your ears if you are around the Park St. T-stop entrance from September 20th to October 20th.
8/20/02
We would like to thank Nikulydin for coming into the studio for an interview! We are very excited to catch their gig at the Milky Way on Thursday and spread their unique brand of groove and trance.

Webcasting is in grave danger. There is a meeting at the Allston Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21. There, ABFree Staff will discuss our battle plan to Bust CARP. Our station's future hangs in the balance. Please read up on the current situation and support the fight to preserve webcasting as we know it.

Whew! Berkfest '02 was excellent! Thanks to Gamelan, High Sierra, and Great Barrington, MA, and everyone else who contributed for assembling and coordinating such an astounding lineup of musicians and putting on an amazing festival! Some of David and DJ 1ey's favorite moments:
-Sound Tribe Sector 9's afternoon set on Friday and late night set on Saturday
-Fuzz and Kellogg's 'All Stripped Down' interlude
-Running into and chilling with Pete Pidgeon
-Spearhead on Saturday afternoon
-Addison Groove Project's funk in the afternoon heat
-Ozomatli's jam session in the middle of the crowd on Sunday
-Tea Leaf Green's rockin' Sunday morning set

At Berkfest, David, DJ 1ey, and friends took part in the first SafeVibes forum. From the Berkfest pocket booklet: "Safe Vibes is striving to unity all members of the festival community-concertgoers, organizers, and artists alike-in an effort to create a strong, safe, and peaceful festival community for people of all ages to enjoy. Through ongoing interactive discussions, SafeVibes hopes to encourage and spread positive vibes throughout the community in order to conunteract the negative elements that threaten to corrode these gatherings."

We were honored and fortunate enough to be able to talk with many members of the festival community, including representatives from PeaceKeeper Medical, Anna from Clean Vibes, Colin from Gamelan, Ken from Terrapin Presents, Michael Franti of Spearhead, and members of Sound Tribe Sector 9. We truly appreciate the chance to talk with everyone at these SafeVibes forums and are inspired by those who wish to affect proactive change in our community. We at Live Live fully support the efforts of SafeVibes and will be contributing our part to the cause of building a positive community at festivals in the coming months. 8/5/02
Things are moving slowly in the world of Live Live due to obligations outside for David and Tim, and due to David's email service deciding to disappear altogether. But never fear! Live Live will continue to bring you the best in live music from around Boston. We are gearing up for the Berkshire Mountain Music Festival on August 9-11. It should be one of the musical highlights of the year! Remember to tune in for the Live Live interview with Tea Leaf Green on Tuesday, August 13.

David and Andrew met yesterday evening to map out a plan for the immediate future of Live Live's growth and development. We are in the process of distilling information down to a press kit, as well as registering www.livelive.org, our future home on the web. This is an exciting time for Live Live: an period of growth and development. Look for the changes to be up on the website soon!
7/23/02
We at Live Live would like to welcome Andrew into our circle. He is sure to contribute great things to the building of a positive, thriving community around live music in Boston.

A meeting of the Minds regarding the future of Live Live took place in between songs during the show tonight. Present: David, Tim, and Andrew, a new recruit to the Live Live team. Andrew brings a skill set to the table that we all greatly value and Live Live will surely benefit from having him around. Andrew and David will be bumping heads together later in the week to see what we can make with what we've got.

If you are interested in helping out or contributing to Live Live, we'd love to talk with you! Please do not hesitiate to contact us.

7/17/02
Things are getting hectic in the world of live music around Boston. The summer music season is in full swing with a plethora of nationally touring acts as well as smaller local acts playing nightly in your neighborhood. Be sure to take advantage of what Boston's live music scene has to offer-take part in something positive!

After a productive townhall meeting with other members of ABFree, we have learned some distressing news. ABFree, along with many other webcasters, are in danger of losing their webcasting ability due to fees levied on their broadcasting. For the full rundown and ABFree's and Live Live's position on the matter, please check out our special Save Our Webcast page.

7/11/02
Due to power outages in Boston, David and Tim are moving slower than usual when it comes to Live Live upkeep. We apologize to you loyal devotees, and promise to keep things up to snuff.

We encourage you all to attend a community meeting TONIGHT at 7pm at the Jackson-Mann School in Union Square in Allston, MA hosted by ABFree Radio. Among the issues to be discussed: the imminent closure of the ABFree Webcast and how to fight it, what the Media is not doing for you, and of course how you can take part in local media via our radio station. This is an excellent community of committed, grassroots organizers, and we hope to see you there.

7/7/02
Thanks to both Arcoda and Addison Groove Project for coming into the studio as guests for Live Live! We should have the interviews posted soon, as well as Pete's acoustic in-studio performances! Also, look for Live Live original Arcoda reviews on Jambase other live music resources on the internet in the near future.

We realize that the Live Live website has been patchy as far as access as of late, and are working on the problem. Thank you for your patience and understanding during our times of technological struggle.

6/30/02
Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda review posted. Enjoy!

Legal issues make things sticky in the world of Live Live. It appears that fees will be imposed on webcasters who broadcast music licensed by larger companies. This could mean that the Live Live archives take a big hit. Stay tuned for the latest in our fight to archive and broadcast freely and our efforts to bring the best in live music to you.

6/27/02
Whew! after returning from an incredible weekend in Manchester, TN, David and Tim are exhausted. But there will be no rest for Live Live in the near future. This week we got generous helpings of Pete Pidgeon, an excellent musician and all-around great guy, starting with an in-studio appearance on Tuesday night and a rockin' set of music with Arcoda at Harper's Ferry on Wednesday night. Look for the review soon.

Thanks to all the bands that are sending us their music. We're almost to the point where we can work our playlists around your submissions, which is very exciting for us as well as for you. Expect to hear from us soon, and count on your music being played for the good people of Boston as soon as our programming permits.

6/19/02
Tim and David are headed down to the Bonnaroo music festival, which marks a very fruitful time in the progression of Live Live. On our little vacation, we take time to thank all who have contacted us, worked with us, and encouraged our project. Most importantly, though, we take time to celebrate a wonderful community build around music.
6/16/02
Thanks to a long, hard night of working, Tim has hammered out a Live Live Guestbook. The guestbook is up! Please sign in and leave a message for the Live Live crew.

Uncle Sammy concert review posted. Dig in.

6/14/02
With the Bonnaroo Music Festival coming up very soon, David, Tim, and the Live Live team are scrambling to get stuff done before they take off to the hills of Tennessee. Fear not, though, as things will be in proper working order upon our return. A big thank you to all those musical acts who sent us music to play over the air. And get psyched for special guests PETE PIDGEON AND ARCODA on June 25, and ADDISON GROOVE PROJECT on July 2. Live Live staff may be taking a vacation, but they'll never stop bringing you the best in the live music scene around Boston.

A big change in organization and content is taking root...a vision perhaps...we hope to bring content on featured acts that digs deeper than you thought possible. We think that what may set Live Live apart from other live music resources are the well-thought reviews and in-depth interviews we have provided, and hope to continue on this path, but on a much largers scale. We, of course, are always looking for volunteers; please send us any ideas and creative sparks that you may have in order to see this process through.

6/11/02
Tim meets David on the street today, and they have a long discussion about the future of Live Live. It comes to this: Live Live is a community endeavour, and always has been since its inception. We shall continue to push onwards in positive directions, but will stress the importance of you, loyal citizen, to join us. It is only by putting time, talent, and effort into something that a real community will form. We encourage you, whomever you may be, to contribute what you will to Live Live and make it yours. This is a resource for anyone and everyone. Please get in contact with the Live Live team to put in your two cents!

Thursday, June 13 is a very important day in the world of Live Live and ABFree. Please come to the ABFree town meeting at 7pm at the Jackson-Mann School in Union Square in Allston and let us hear how you want the media to serve you better, and hear what you can do for the media. Then, after the business is concluded, join us at Great Scott's on the corner of Harvard Ave and Comm Ave for a night of Jam/Funk! Not only do the proceeds benefit ABFree and Cambridge's Zeitgiest Gallery, but it's also the Live Live Pick of the Week!

6/9/02
David's finally done with some housekeeping at Live Live central and is pushing for some more solid content. Look for the Uncle Sammy review to be up soon, as well as some more goodies that you can really dig your teeth into.
6/6/02
We contacted Lee from Homegrown Music Network to see if we could get a link up on www.homegrownmusic.net. He generously agreed, and also took the extra step to send Live Live's information to the bands affiliated with the HGMN. And we've received quite a response! A big THANK YOU to all the bands who have contacted us. We hope to be spinning your music for the good people of Boston in the near future. And of course, a giant THANK YOU to Lee and the Homegrown Music Network, a music resource that Live Live aspires to.

DJ 1ey and David took in Umphrey's McGee and Uncle Sammy last night at the Middle East and although exhausted, were most pleased with what they heard. Look for a review of Uncle Sammy's set some time soon...

Bonnaroo in two weeks. Tim and David are fairly excited. While at Bonnaroo, you may see someone carrying a big sign reading "I AM HAPPY." It's most likely David or Tim. feel free to take the time to stop and talk to them about music, community, Live Live, or whatever may be on your bliss-filled mind.

6/2/02
Quite an afternoon out on the Esplanade in Boston. The rain held, and Addison Groove Project funked for the AIDS Walk participants along with Michigan Blacksnake. David caught up with AGP after the show and has set up a date for them to come on the radio show. David also ran into local musician Pete Pidgeon, mastermind of Arcoda, friend of AGP, Uncle Sammy, Club D'Elf, Miracle Orchestra, and many others. He's decided to join the Live Live family as well...please don't miss their upcoming guest appearances!

Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda: June 25
Addison Groove Project: July 2

As always, if you are a musician looking for some free exposure and hot press, please email us.

6/1/02
Happy June! As the weather turns wonderful, we here at Live Live are hard at work updating our website and tweaking our radio programming in order to bring you the highest quality live music resource around. Hopefully you'll enjoy the latest web overhaul. Pretty pretty buttons and pictures.
5/29/02
A big thanks to Brian and Max from Uncle Sammy for sending Live Live promotional materials! If you haven't heard, Uncle Sammy is playing the Middle East Downstairs on June 5 along with Umphrey's McGee. If you listened to Live Live last night, you heard Uncle Sammy on the airwaves. as good as that was, it will be better live! Be sure to check this show out, and be sure to give a heads up to David, Tim DJ 1-ey, or the rest of the Live Live cast of characters.

ABFree is having a benefit very very soon. Please make your way to O'Brien's Pub (3 Harvard Ave, Allston) on Thursday, June 6 for some fine live music being played for a great cause. Take in a good show and support ABFree!

5/21/02
The LPBN has changed their archiving system. Now, you can listen to streaming segments of ABFree Radio in one hour blocks instead of four hour blocks. They are also much more reliable (not as many shows are lost). Or so Tim says. We should be updating our archives section soon, but for your quick fix, click on the links to the lpbn source on the archives page.
5/19/02
WHEW! A long and thought-provoking night of camraderie with Tim, DJ 1ey, G Phatty, David, DJ MY-T, and others can wear a body out! But as Digable Planets say: Sunday's to relax. David spent all day sprucing up the website with help from DJ 1ey. hopefully the changes will be up soon.

The push is on to contact bands and live musical acts that may be interested in joining Live Live on the air, or at the very least getting some airplay. If you know of a band interested in FREE ADVERTISING, or you are in a band looking for some effective, free exposure, please drop a line to us at livelive@h0mer.etree.org.

5/17/02
The Bonnaroo Music Festival (www.bonnaroo.com) is releasing a limited number of tickets to those who were previously shut out on Saturday, May 18 at Noon. Bonnaroo will potentially be the biggest summer festival for the '02 season. These tickets will be moving very quickly, so if you are interested at all, make haste to the Bonnaroo website. Tim and David have their tickets. Do you?
5/14/02
While David holds down the fort at ABFree, Tim, DJ 1ey, and out-of-town field correspondant Mr. SuperLove make their way to the Middle East downstairs tonight for Aesop Rock, El-P, and Mr. Lif. NYC Underground Hip Hop at its contemporary finest. Heads will be bobbing. This show is so good, Mr. Superlove decided to move back from Hawaii just to see it. Howzabout that?

As always, if you run into these fine gentlemen, one scribbling in a notebook, one newly shaven tall redhaired, one scruffy and visor-clad, say hi to the Live Live crew. And may the beats drop furiously tonight at the Middle East.

As the summer months roll in, the music festival season begins! Cars, tents, big open spaces, and some of the best acts touring today. Stay tuned to Live Live for hot tips on all the music festivals to come in the summer of '02.

5/9/02
Community meeting for Allston-Brighton Free Radio tonight. An important meeting indeed, underattended, where the future of ABFree was discussed and debated. How to give the members of the community a voice? how to bring so much quality material over the airwaves and into your home? The ABFree Think Tank pushes on, continues efforts to keep public radio in existence. Live Live remains strong, ready and willing to build a positive community around the live music scene in Boston and beyond.
5/2/02
DJ 1ey calls in from the field. He reports that the Blackalicious show at axis was extremely positive, and that the Talib Kweli show at Lupo's in Providence on Sunday will be equally as positive. He's also giving us the heads-up on some choice weekly gigs in the Boston area:

DJ 1ey's HOTLIST OF WEEKLY GIGS IN BOSTON
Bluegrass-Tuesday nights at the Cantab Lounge (Central Square)
Hip Hop, Soul, and Groove-Tuesday nights (LATE!) at Matt Murphy's (Brookline Village)
Jazz/Funk-Club D'Elf Thursday nights at the Lizard Lounge (Cambridge)

Something for everyone. So when you go to one of these events, look out for a tall dude with a recently shaven head and a mountainsmith buttpack, (the red dreads are gone!), and say hey to DJ 1ey. Ask him about his first turntable, ask him about where to find good reggae and hip hop, ask him how you can get involved in Live Live. 1ey is a valuable resource and a good guy. Make friends.

4/30/02
Apologies, loyal listeners...David is not feeling too well, and will not be making it into the studios for Live Live tonight. We will be back with an extra specail show next week to compensate for our lost week.

Technical difficulties abound...
the lpbn archiving system has been very sketchy for the past couple of weeks, and as a result, we have not been able to archive the shows and post them here in .mp3 format for you. We are extremely disappointed that we have lost the show where Satyananda came on and talked with us. This is the nature of live music and things related to it, though...exists in the moment and then is gone. We are lucky to have the opportunity to document these moments as effectively as we do, but we can't capture every single moment for posterity.

Nevertheless, we are sad that the Satyananda interview is lost in the ether. If you haven't read a review of their show, please do. They are a band very worth your time.

Again, any technologically inclined people with some extra time and motivation to help out with Live Live are more than welcome! Contact Tim and David by email.

4/28/02
Reviews for Addison Groove Project and Satyananda are posted. Dig in.

A big thanks to Satyananda for allowing Live Live to take in their set at the Middle East, and for coming on the show last Tuesday. Some very good conversation about making music, playing music, and the local community. An archived version of the show is up in the Live Live Archives section. Very eduational.

David finally finds the time and has the means to tweak the website, eliminate some bugs, and update the playlists, news, reviews, picks of the week, and links. so you, citizen, can stay on top of your music game.

We are still looking for volunteers to pitch in whatever they can to the Live Live project. If you have motivation to contribute to a community being formed around live music in Boston, please contact David and Tim at livelive@h0mer.etree.org.

4/25/02
Tim finds some troubling news about the state of ABFree's webcasting capabilities. It seems that the law wants to meddle with the affairs of a small, noncommercial radio station. ABFree's future is in question...please visit www.abfreeradio.org for more details on the state of freedom of speech over the airwaves.
4/19/02
Show reviews are posted for Townhall and Spearhead. The Live Live media onslaught takes root on the Web.

A big thanks to Jordan from the Townhall family for providing Live Live with resources for such an original and wonderful band!

4/16/02
Trouble in the very community we are trying to build...
On the way home from tonight's show, David was mugged just three blocks from his house. Wallet gone. The Live Live upkeep might have to take a back seat to David getting his things back together. Stay tuned for the ongoing fight against the negative forces that threaten our community...

A big thanks to Aaron and Powderfinger Productions for setting Live Live up with some Addison Groove Project CDs! Since AGP's tour schedule is somewhat sparse this spring, we at Live Live will be making sure that AGP brings the funk to the good people of Boston on 1670 AM.

4/7/02
The place Live Live calls home is undergoing some serious renovations now...
...but gettin' there in a major way.

it comes down through the grapevine that Trey Anastasio and Phish are now banned from furthur-the etree.org sanctioned peer-to-peer file sharing system. Apparently someone leaked Trey's new album on furthur, and now the good people at Phish are asking us to pull all Phish and Trey files from the program.

4/6/02
New LL website being built!! David's teaching himself HTML and going from the ground up to make things look pretty. so much for pure substance...

David's also very tired and happy from the Addison Groove Project CD release show on friday night 4/5. AGP is playing at Harper's Ferry on Sunday 4/14 in case you missed them this round.

Phish will make an appearance in the unknown state "The Simpsons" call home in an episode of the animated series scheduled for broadcast April 7, according to a Fox spokesperson. The group will perform "Run Like an Antelope" off 1991's Lawn Boy as well as a few bars of the "Simpsons" theme at a rally to decriminalize marijuana for medicinal purposes.

The rally comes at the end of an episode wherein Homer gets a pot prescription to ease his pain after being attacked by a "swarm of crows," the spokesperson said. Unlike Afroman, however, Homer J's career actually improves "because he got high" -- his boss at the nuclear power plant, Mr. Burns, promotes him for finding humor in the old codger's jokes where, when sober, there was none.

Neighbor Ned Flanders opposes Springfield's pro-pot stance, leads the charge to re-criminalize the potent plant and holds a public vote, which prompts the rally. Much to the chagrin of Phish, some stoney Springfieldians and millions of viewers watching at home, the polls will fall in Flanders' favor by the time the band takes the stage.

Trey Band Album coming out on April 30th
Michael Franti to Release New CD 2002-01-28 11:35:58 Michael Franti and Spearhead have begun work on their fourth album, tentatively entitled Everyone Deserves Music . The album, scheduled for a September release on Six Degrees, will include the first tracks with Franti on guitar. It was written during Spearhead's many "Exspeariences" of the past year. The groups most recent album, Stay Human, was released in May of 2001.
